Cat-3 - Category 3 cable is used in analog telephone, 10 base-T, and T1 (conditioned lines) applications. The cable contains twisted pair wire of 22 to 24 AWG and comes UTP (unshielded twisted pair) or STP (shielded twisted pair). The cable is used for digital or data-transport applications with speed of up to 16 MHz at 300 feet.
Cat-5- Category 5 cable is used in 10 base-T, 100 base-T, token ring, switched token ring, ATM and T1 applications. The cable contains twisted pair wire of 22 to 24 AWG and comes UTP or STP. Each pair in a cable sheath has a different number of twists per foot. The cable is used for digital or data-transport applications with speed of up to 100 MHz at 300 feet.
Cat-5e - Category 5e cable is used in 10 base-T, 100 base-T, 1000 base-T, token ring, switched token ring, ATM and T1 applications. The cable contains twisted pair wire of 22 to 24 AWG and comes UTP or STP. Each pair in a cable sheath has a higher number of twists per foot than Cat-5 cable. The cable is used for digital or data-transport applications with speed of up to 350 MHz at 300 feet.
Category 6 cable, commonly referred to as Cat 6, is a cable standard for Gigabit Ethernet and other network protocols that is backward compatible with the Category 5/5e and Category 3 cable standards. Cat-6 features more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet). It is expected to suit the 10GBASE-T (10Gigabit Ethernet) standard, although with limitations on length if unshielded Cat 6 cable is used.
